Uphold Pennsylvania’s Environmental Rights Amendment! Sign onto the letter below:
Dear Pennsylvania legislators,
We urge you to fulfill your constitutional duty to honor our environmental rights to pure water, clean air and healthy environments in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Communities across the state of Pennsylvania are drinking contaminated water; breathing contaminated air; seeing forests fall and drilling rigs rise; and watching as industry pollutes our waterways, degrades our ecosystems and harms fish and wildlife.
Our Pennsylvania Constitution has a Green Amendment that guarantees our inalienable rights to pure water, clean air and healthy environments. Article 1, Section 27 says,
“The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania’s public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people.”
We call on every government official – local, county and state; elected, appointed or hired — to fulfill your Constitutional obligation to uphold Article 1, Section 27 by taking aggressive action to address the urgent environmental and climate challenges that confront us here in the Commonwealth, including preventing new harms and addressing those that are already ongoing. You have the power … use it!
