SUMMARY:Thinking Like a Watershed ~ 2023 Virtual Series on Water & Soil Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, February 14\, 7 pm CT\n“The Green Amendment Movement as a Path to Environmental Health”\nMaya K. van Rossum— Founder\, Green Amendment for the Generations\nHow the Green Amendment movement is incorporating constitutional rights at the state level to codify a healthy environment.\n\nMontana\, Pennsylvania\, and most recently\, New York\, have Green Amendments incorporated into their state constitutions that guarantee environmental protections. Author and attorney Maya K. van Rossum says clean air and water\, and a stable climate\, are entitlements for all. Coining the phrase in her 2017 book by the same title\, van Rossum and her non profit\, Green Amendments for the Generations\, are on a national campaign to protect the planet by bringing more states on board. Iowa\, for example\, was introduced to Green Amendment legislation on Earth Day 2021 by Representative Chuck Isenhart.\n\nHow does this environmental tool work in today’s politically charged and radically changing climate?\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\nThis monthly series is a project of the Upper Mississippi River Initiative (UMRI.org) of the Izaak Walton League of America\, with co-hosts Chris Henning of the Panora Conservation Chapter and Des Moines Chapter Communication Director\, Bud Hartley. UMRI features guests for 30-40 minute presentations that shed daylight on good works done in the name of the Mississippi and its uplands\, to uplift our shared goals for a cleaner river\, a cared for environment\, and kinder communities. Recorded programs are available shortly after they air live.

SUMMARY:Collected Works Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 16\, 6:00pm MT \nCollected Works Bookstore\n202 Galisteo St\nSanta Fe\, NM 87501 \nMaya van Rossum will give a presentation\, followed by a conversation with Senator Sedillo Lopez and Representative Joanne Ferrary who are both sponsoring The Green Amendment\, a Constitutional Amendment\, in the 2023 NM Legislative Session. Representative Tara Lujan will moderate the conversation. \nAbout the Event\n\n\n\nThis will be an in-store presentation. \nThe Green Amendment is available to purchase online here or by calling the store to order (505) 988-4226 \nA veteran environmentalist shares her roadmap to a healthier world—one that uses the law to empower activists and provide hope for communities everywhere. \nWe have reached a critical tipping point in our fight for the environment: Corporations profit off climate change\, natural disasters devastate homes\, and the most vulnerable suffer the health effects of pollution. Yet our laws are designed to accommodate this destruction rather than prevent it. Without government support\, it’s no wonder people feel powerless. \nBut there is a solution. In The Green Amendment\, veteran environmentalist Maya K. van Rossum presents her radically simple plan for a green future: bypass local laws and turn to the ultimate authority—our state and federal constitutions—to ensure we have the right to a healthy environment. \nThrough compelling interviews with activists on the ground\, clear evidence from experts\, and heartbreaking stories from those hit hardest by environmental ruin\, The Green Amendment lights the path forward. In this updated edition of her trailblazing 2017 book\, van Rossum invites readers to join the movement by sharing: \n\nWhy Green Amendments work where other movements have failed\nHow to position Green Amendments and what specific language offers the strongest legal protections\nHow to argue in favor of environmental rights\, and the economic and health benefits that will help activists make the case\nHow Green Amendments address the crucial intersection of environmentalism and anti-racism\nWhat everyone—from artists and students to scientists and lawyer—can do to further the cause\n\nWith the power of The Green Amendment\, we can claim our environmental rights\, ensuring a clean\, safe Earth for generations to come. \nAbout the Author \nMaya K. van Rossum is the founder of Green Amendments For the Generations\, a grassroots non-profit inspiring constitutional recognition and protection of environmental rights in every state and ultimately at the federal level. van Rossum is also the Delaware Riverkeeper\, leading the 4 state\, watershed-based advocacy organization\, the Delaware Riverkeeper Network\, for 30 years. She co-hosts Green Genes\, an environmental podcast with her daughter.
