SUMMARY:Levitt Center at Hamilton College
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 17\, 2023\, 4:15 pm \nKirner-Johnson (KJ) 127 Red Pit\, Map #14\nHamilton College\, Clinton\, NY \nThe Levitt Center at Hamilton College welcomes author and founder of the Green Amendments movement\, Maya van Rossum for a special talk. \nFor decades\, communities have relied on Federal and State laws to ensure protection of a clean environment. And for decades\, while achieving some important successes in environmental protection\, overall the health of our environment for present and future generations has continued to degrade from a growing number of sources. The truth is\, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution as much as\, perhaps even more than\, to prevent it. As a result people feel powerless when it comes to preserving the quality of their water\, air\, public parks\, and natural spaces. But there is a solution for achieving better\, and much needed\, protection of our environment: bypass the laws and turn to the ultimate authority—our state and federal constitutions. \nThis talk will discuss a new tool for environmental preservation\, one that will provide a new way of thinking about\, and pursuing\, environmental protection from a policy as well as a legal perspective. \nWe all have the right to pure water\, clean air\, and a healthy environment. It’s time to truly secure that right for our own sake and that of future generations. \nFor more information\, visit: \nhttps://www.hamilton.edu/academics/centers/levitt/calendar/calendar-event/5383329

SUMMARY:Bloomfield Public Library
DESCRIPTION:From Rhetoric to Reality: Green Amendments as a New Path for Environmental Protection (Virtual) \nThursday\, August 24\, 2023\n6:30 PM – 8:00 PM (Virtual)\nRegister here:\nhttps://bplct.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?EventId=11687&backTo=Calendar&startDate=2023/08/01\n\nJoin Maya k van Rossum at a virtual event hosted by the Bloomfield Public Library in Connecticut.\n\n\nCommunities are drinking contaminated water\, breathing polluted air\, facing the devastating consequences of climate instability\, and suffering the health\, safety and economic consequences that result. BIPOC and low wealth communities are particularly hard hit; suffering from higher rates of exposure to damaged environments and contamination making them sick\, impacting the ability of their children to learn\, and compounding the inequities of systemic racism.  At the same time\, future generations are facing an increasingly uncertain future; fearful of the climate crisis predictions that are increasingly becoming an unavoidable reality.\n\nIn her inspiring talk\, Maya van Rossum offers not only hope\, but a clear path forward.  She is traveling the nation sharing her simple but powerful message: It is time to put the inalienable right to a clean\, safe and healthy environment on par with our most treasured rights and freedoms — freedom of speech\, freedom to protest\, and freedom to worship according to our beliefs. How? Using the power of democracy and the passage of state constitutional Green Amendments.\n\nThis partnership program is brought to you by Bloomfield Public Library (BPL)\, Green Amendments For The Generation (GAFTG)\, 350CT\, Climate Crisis Mobilization (C3M)\, and People’s Actions for Clean Energy (PACE). Learn more about the CT Green Amendment here. Request a library copy of Maya’s book here (note: during BPL’s transition phase this summer\, this may not be available\, or you may choose to pick up the book in another town). SUMMARY:Securing Our Right to a Healthy Climate: Legal Strategies and Voices from the Turnaround Generation
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Panel / Presentation hosted by Sustainable Hudson Valley \nYoung people in Montana recently won a landmark legal victory in a lawsuit targeting the state’s fossil fuel production as a violation of their rights to clean air and water and a healthy environment\, which is laid out in Montana’s state constitution – and New York’s. These youth-led efforts have been a moral mobilizer in spite of being legally challenging. How do we translate constitutional rights into meaningful action to restore local environments and reverse patterns of injustice?  What strategies will get results? This lively strategic conversation brings together a top national leader in the “environmental rights” movement with a Newburgh civil rights and environmental justice leader\, a Columbia undergraduate who is a plaintiff in a similar suit\, and a young Environmental Justice Fellow in the City of Newburgh. How do we move out of playing defense and secure our rights to a healthy environment\, in court and at the local level? Hear from Hudson Valley grassroots leaders working in hands-on environmental restoration along with legal advocates\, as we weave a web of strategy by and for the “turnaround generation. \nFriday\, September 22\, 2023\n4:30 PM 5:30 PM \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kf-qoqDkoH9PJijpkhUfZ-WBx9tmJAvGR \nFeaturing: \n\nMaya van Rossum\, Founder of the Green Amendment For The Generations Movement\nKyle Conway\, Board Member\, NAACP Newburgh / Highland Falls\nClaudia Sachs\, Columbia University Student\n\nFor more information\, please visit: https://www.hvclimatesolutionsweek.org/events/securing-our-right-to-a-healthy-climate-legal-strategies-and-voices-from-the-turnaround-generation \n

SUMMARY:IT'S GIVING TUESDAY - Pls Donate & Spread the Word
DESCRIPTION:Over 40% of Americans are breathing unhealthy air\, and 20% have been exposed to unsafe drinking water. Environmental racism continues to allow BIPOC and low-income communities to suffer a higher rate of pollution\, along with increased health and economic consequences. The vast majority of this damage is inflicted quite legally – the result of a legal system crafted through a lens of politics\, lobbying\, and corporate access. \nWe cannot afford to go backwards with weakening environmental protections. \nPlease Donate To Support Moving Forward. \nGreen Amendments For the Generations is the only organization working nationwide to codify the rights to a healthy environment in our state constitutions\, on par with freedom of speech and freedom of religion. In just a few years\, our Green Amendment movement has grown to include over 275 organizations spanning 19 states. \nBy making a donation on November 28\, known as #GivingTuesday\, you’re contributing to a positive solution for environmental protection that empowers communities to stand up for and secure their human rights to a healthy environment. \nThis work would not be possible without you! \nPlease Donate If You Can \nAnd Share This Donation Link with Others: \nhttps://givebutter.com/CommunityRising/givingtuesday1 \n
