SUMMARY:Rally to save the Atlantic Sturgeon
DESCRIPTION:Join us to help save the ancient and ENDANGERED Atlantic Sturgeon of the Delaware River –November 16 We Will Gather to Call on Our Government Agencies to Act Now to Protect Our Sturgeon From Extinction.\nWith Only 250 Spawning Adults Left We Are Running Out of Time!\nSign up here to attend!\n\nThe Delaware River is home to a genetically unique population of Atlantic Sturgeon found nowhere else in the world. The Atlantic sturgeon\, listed as a federally protected endangered species since 2012\, has a storied history in our Delaware River. Early American settlers said there were so many they could cross the River walking on their backs. But today\, there are less than 250 spawning adults left of the River’s genetically unique line. Resource managers and regulatory agencies have neglected their duties to protect the health\, habitat\, and safety of the sturgeon.  Soon it will be too late\n\nJoin Us on November 16th at 11:00 am in a mock funeral procession starting on the southeast corner of Philadelphia City Hall and ending at the US Army Corps of Engineer offices to deliver a message for the sturgeon: We Need Action Now To Save The Atlantic Sturgeon of the Delaware From Extinction.\n\nThe truth is\, if our agencies don’t start to take immediate action\, we will be burying the last of this beautiful ancient species\, adding them to the ever growing list of extinct species\, and depriving future generations of the opportunity to witness this majestic giant\, swimming in the Delaware River.\n\nWhat is the event:\nIn a funeral style procession\, join as we carry representations of the 180\,000 sturgeon already lost and the mere 250 sturgeon that still remain. Come as you want or in funeral attire so these agencies can see that their lack of oversight and protection\, spells the death of this keystone and iconic species.\nWhen:\n• November 16\, Raindate November 17th\, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM – we will begin to gather at 10 am\nWhere:\nWe will start to gather outside City Hall on the southeast corner\, walk around City Hall\, and circle back to the Army Corps Offices at the Wanamaker Building at 100 East Penn Square\, Philadelphia. .\nOpportunities to Participate:\nIn addition to walking with us in procession\, we will need volunteers to help carry signs and the representative sturgeon. We would also welcome you bringing your own sign seeking to speak for the sturgeon. Sign up here to let us know you will be joining us and whether you would like to volunteer to help carry our signs or bring your own.Sign up here to attend!\n\nWhether you can join us or not – Please sign the petition to urge the agencies to act and save the Atlantic Sturgeon of the Delaware.

SUMMARY:Western Washington University Environmental Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, communities have relied on Federal and State laws to ensure protection of a clean environment. And for decades\, while achieving some important successes in environmental protection\, overall the health of our environment for present and future generations has continued to degrade from a growing number of sources. The truth is\, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution as much as\, perhaps even more than\, to prevent it. As a result people feel powerless when it comes to preserving the quality of their water\, air\, public parks\, and natural spaces. But there is a solution for achieving better\, and much needed\, protection of our environment: bypass the laws and turn to the ultimate authority—our state and federal constitutions. \nThis talk will seek to discuss and inspire a new tool for environmental preservation\, one that will provide a new way of thinking about\, and pursuing\, environmental protection from a policy as well as a legal perspective. \nThis talk will have a special introduction by Representative Debra Lekanoff\, representing the 40th legislative district of Washington state and lead sponsor of the Washington Green Amendment \n\nThursday\, December 1\, 2022 – 4:30 pm \n\n\nAcademic Instructional Center (West) room 204 (AW-204)\nWestern Washington University\n259-333 21st St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225\n \n\n\nThe Environmental Speaker Series is hosted by the College of the Environment at Western Washington University.  The Series is free and open to the public. \n\n\nMore information can be found here:\nhttps://cenv.wwu.edu/speaker-series/rhetoric-reality-green-amendments-new-path-environmental-protection
