SUMMARY:Green Amendments: Vehicles for Environmental Justice?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Environmental Law Institute and Green Amendments For The Generations\nJuly 22\, 12:00pm-2:00pm ET\nRegister in advance here.\n\n\nDespite existing environmental laws\, communities across the United States are still exposed to dangerous environmental conditions. This can range from water contamination\, air pollution\, toxic levels of exposure to hazardous substances\, the impacts of climate change\, including sea level rise and extreme weather events\, and more. These harmful environmental impacts can have devastating effects on public health\, particularly in marginalized communities. \nOne emerging legal mechanism to address these issues are Green Amendments: self-executing provisions added to the bill of rights section of a state constitution. These amendments recognize and protect the rights of all people\, including future generations\, to pure water\, clean air\, a stable climate\, and a healthy environment.  Currently\, thirteen states have put forth Green Amendment proposals\, including Hawaii\, Kentucky\, New Jersey\, New Mexico\, New York\, Oregon\, Vermont\, Washington and West Virginia. \nCan Green Amendments help secure stronger environmental protection? Do they provide additional strength for the environmental justice movement? What are the practical opportunities and challenges states are likely to face in advancing\, implementing and enforcing these amendments? Join the Environmental Law Institute\, Green Amendments for the Generations\, and leading panelists from across the country to explore the potential for Green Amendments to secure the constitutional recognition and protection of the right to a healthy environment and to provide a new path to help secure true Environmental Justice for all. \nPanelists:\nSamuel L. Brown\, Partner\, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP\, Moderator\nKim Gaddy\, Environmental Justice Organizer\, Clean Water Action\, and Founder\, South Ward Environmental Alliance\nArtemisio Romero y Carver\, Board Director\, Youth United for Climate Crisis Action\nSenator Antoinette Sedillo Lopez\, New Mexico State Senate and former Professor\, University of New Mexico School of Law\nTerry A. Sloan\, Director\, Southwest Native Cultures\, and Intergovernmental Tribal Liaison\, City of Albuquerque\nMaya K. van Rossum\, Founder\, National Green Amendment Movement\, and Founder\, Green Amendments for the Generations

SUMMARY:A Michigan Green Amendment: A New Tool for Environmental Protection & Justice
DESCRIPTION:The people of Michigan have rights to free speech and religion\, the right to bear arms and to freely assemble\, but we do not have the right to clean water and air\, a stable climate and healthy environments. The failure to constitutionally recognize and protect environmental rights means that government officials are often free to disregard water\, air\, climate and environmental protection in favor of other political or economic priorities and there is little recourse for impacted communities. \nLeader Maya van Rossum and her organization\, Green Amendments For The Generations\, are working to transform this legal paradigm by inspiring support for Green Amendments\, i.e. constitutional amendments added to the Bill of Rights section of every state constitution\, and ultimately the federal constitution\, which recognize and protect the inalienable rights of all people to pure water\, clean air\, a stable climate and healthy environments—regardless of race\, ethnicity or socioeconomic status and including future generations. Only Pennsylvania (largely due to the work of van Rossum’s organization) and Montana have Green Amendments today\, but since 2014 she and her organization have inspired Green Amendment proposals in 13 states across the nation. Will Michigan be next? \nSeptember 13\, 7:00pm ET on Zoom \nRegister here: https://bit.ly/MIGreenAmendmentWebinar \nPlease join long time environmental activist\, Rev. Richard Killmer in welcoming Maya\, as she lays out this new agenda for environmental advocacy\, one that will transform how we think about and pursue environmental protection and environmental justice from both a policy and legal perspective. Let’s discuss and explore the idea of pursuing a constitutional environmental rights amendment\, or Green Amendment\, in Michigan together! \nWe all have the right to pure water\, clean air\, a stable climate\, and healthy environments. It’s time to focus on how to truly secure that right for our own sake and that of future generations.

SUMMARY:A Washington Green Amendment: A New Tool for Environmental Protection & Justice
DESCRIPTION:We have been fighting for a cleaner environment for decades\, and with the rapidly increasing effects of climate change hitting everyone and everywhere\, we now need to step up our game.  We know that our current laws support the old fossil fuel infrastructure\, so in order to move more quickly into a new\, clean\, and sustainable future\, we need to update them to enhance and encourage all of our ongoing efforts. \nOne pathway is to start at the top\, with our State and Federal Constitutions\, which guide and define all aspects of government decisionmaking. 13 states across the nation\, including Washington\, are rising up to advance Green Amendments\, or constitutional amendments added to the Bill of Rights section of a state constitution\, which recognize and protect the inalienable rights of all people to pure water\, clean air\, a stable climate and healthy environments—regardless of race\, ethnicity or socioeconomic status and including future generations. \nJoin Representative Debra Lekanoff\, prime sponsor of HJR 4205\, in welcoming Maya van Rossum\, national expert and Founder of Green Amendments For The Generations\, for a presentation and Q&A on the power of a Green Amendment to transform how we think about and pursue environmental protection and environmental justice from both a policy and legal perspective. \nSeptember 14\, 5:00pm PT – Register: https://bit.ly/WAGreenAmendmentWebinar \n“We can’t save the world by playing by the rules\, because the rules have to be changed.
