Green Amendments For The Generations

Big top down approaches to fighting climate and saving the environment are great, but many times the connection and empowerment of individual citizens and communities are forgotten under those policies.
To be able to take on many of the battles that ordinary Americans see in their backyards, you need legal standing. A #GreenAmendment offers that standing to average citizens, so they can bring government actors within arm's reach and get justice for their communities. A self-executing Green Amendment is a palatable, direct way for locals to get the change they need.

On January 19, the first day of NM’s 2021 Legislative Session, Joint Senate Resolution 3, a resolution to amend the New Mexico Constitution in order to add enforceable environmental rights, was introduced by Senator Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, Senator Bill Soules and Representative Joanne Ferrary and was referred to the Senate Rules Committee, followed by Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Mimi Stewart, Senator Harold Pope, Jr., Representative Tara Luján and Representative Andrea Romero are signing on as co-sponsors.
The Joint Resolution proposes amending the state constitution’s Bill of Rights to recognize and protect the rights of all of the people of New Mexico including future generations “to a clean and healthy environment, including pure water, clean air, healthy ecosystems, and a stable climate, and to the preservation of the natural, cultural, scenic and healthful qualities of the environment.”
