A Rhode Island Green Amendment initiative is beginning to take shape. A leadership team is forming and coalescing around the right Green Amendment language proposal for the state. Also forming are ways to educate the community around the values of a Rhode Island Green Amendment and secure active community engagement.
The development language currently reads:
There shall be added to Article 1 of the State Constitution a Section 25 that reads:
All people in the state of Rhode Island (The Ocean State) have an inherent, inalienable, indefeasible, and self-executing right to clean air, clean water, healthy and uncontaminated soil, a life-supporting climate, and the preservation of the environments natural, scenic, and recreational values. The state shall serve as trustee of the natural resources of the state, and shall conserve, protect, and maintain these resources for the benefit of all the people, including both present and future generations. The state shall not infringe upon these rights, and shall protect them and Rhode Island’s natural resources equitably for all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomics.
